Mountain View Student Receives Highest Acolade For HSC Music
Mountain View Adventist College’s HSC Student Michelle Vele has been nominated to perform at Encore – one of the highest recognitions available to HSC students. Encore is a program of outstanding performances and compositions by students from the HSC Music examinations as determined by the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA).
Born in Port Moresby, Papua New Guinea (PNG), Michelle came to Mountain View at the end of 2018 not really knowing where she belonged. A quiet girl, not confident in herself or her singing, Michelle was not engaged in her learning whilst living in PNG and was and ready to drop out of school. Wanting a brighter future for Michelle, her parents decided to send her to live with her brother in Sydney, Australia. Michelle’s sister-in-law Jennifer just happened to be a teacher at Mountain View – who also loves music.
Embarking on a whole new system of education and not knowing what to expect, Michelle joined the school choir. As Michelle was encouraged along the way, her voice was discovered. Jennifer continued to provide Michelle with voice training, taking her to the park where Michelle learnt how to project her voice. Since coming to Mountain View, Michelle has overcome a number of uncertainties and through encouragement by her school community, her hard work and by God’s grace, Michelle has reaped the benefits. Michelle’s music teacher, Mr Erceg, commented that, “Michelle is a disciplined musician and singer that is always willing to work hard. She has achieved her results through consistent daily practise of her craft.”
Whilst living in Australia, Michelle gives back to the community. She is involved with the Hoxton Park church, Pathfinders, Adventurers, is a Master Guide Pathfinder and actively helps with the College chapels. Michelle’s goal is to become a high school teacher specialising in Music and English. “We are so proud of Michelle and her willingness to humbly use her amazing voice to serve the school, the community and God”, said Principal Mrs Heise.
What a wonderful story this has been for Michelle and we wish her all the best for the Encore performance and wherever God leads her for the future.
